7 Ways to Cleanse Your Home and Workspace
Apr 25, 2022Negative energy is a real thing. It’s not something many of us can see, but most of us definitely feel it, and we know it affects us in different ways. It can linger anywhere – in homes and work spaces, trains and buses, curtains, furniture, people, shops and clothes. Energy can even stay trapped from past experiences, which is why it is very important to make a cleansing practice part of your daily health ritual, in your home and/or workspace.
Smudging and cleansing practices go back thousands of years. Most Indigenous cultures used smoking and cleansing practices in various ceremonies and rituals. White Sage, Palo Santo, Rosemary, Frankincense, as well as Eucalyptus were often burned to clear negative energy.
In addition to burning various plants and leaves, we can incorporate other practices.
1. Cleansing Space with Sound
Sound is a very effective way to remove negative energy from homes and workspaces. If you have your own practice or workspace you can do this whenever works for you. And if you work with other people, see if you can come in a little earlier or stay after hours for a bit, and play nature sounds to cleanse the vibe.
You could search Spotify for any water sounds, like rain, ocean waves but also sounds of the wind and birds are very effective. Find something that you enjoy.
Tibetan singing bowls and Native flute or didgeridoo are great for cleansing negative energy as well, and you can also find these on Spotify. I also like to use various Tibetan chants for this.
If you have your own Tibetan singing bowls, the effect is even more powerful!
Try to repeat this routine weekly, or at least once a month.
2. Crystals
Another super easy and effective way of cleansing negative energy from your workspace is by using crystals. Some crystals have the unique ability of absorbing negative energy in the environment. My favourites for this purpose are Black Tourmaline and Black Obsidian.
Black Tourmaline is particularly successful in soaking up negative energy radiating from technology like computers, cell phones, and TV’s. Keep a Black Tourmaline next to your computer and/or wear a Black Tourmaline bracelet while you work.
It's also a good idea to have a couple of crystals in your workspace that attract positive vibes. A couple of the best stones for this purpose are Selenite and Rose Quartz. Selenite is a high vibrational stone and self-cleansing. Rose quartz promotes compassion and peace.
You can keep crystals on your desk, around your house, as well as wear them as jewellery.
3. Essential Oils for Cleansing
Consider diffusing essential oils in your home and workspace, to cleanse the energy as well as to create a positive atmosphere.
Check with the people around you if they mind, most people don’t - but if they do, instead of diffusing you can dab a little oil on your wrist, shirt sleeve or even rub some through your hair!
You can also use a drop of essential oil on a rag or paper towel and rub it over your desk or kitchen bench. It smells amazing and cleanses the negative vibes!
Lemongrass, Eucalyptus, Lemon Eucalyptus and Peppermint are all wonderful cleansing essential oils to remove negative energy from any space.

4. Salt
Salt is one of the most effective negative-energy absorbing ingredients there is. A bowl of salt on your desk, or even a small container of salt in a drawer will work wonders. This is why Himalayan salt lamp are so amazing!
In Japan they practice mori-shio, and place small piles of salt around a room or doorway to ward off negative energy. You can do this to support your space as well. Leave the salt out for one to two days only, and then sweep or vacuum.
5. Palo Santo
Palo Santo has been used in spiritual practices and healing ceremonies as far back as the Inca empire. Even though it has many healing properties, the wood is mainly used for cleansing. Due to its sacred nature, Palo Santo – which is indigenous to South America – can only be harvested from trees that have died of natural causes, please check before purchase the company uses a ethical and sustainable source.
How to Use:
Light a stick of Palo Santo and let the flame burn for up to one minute, before blowing it out and walking through the areas you wish to cleanse, allowing the smoke to waft through the room.
6. White Sage
Native Americans have used White Sage for centuries as part of a spiritual ritual to cleanse a person or space, and to promote healing and wisdom, and they continue to use it today. White Sage has been used traditionally to purify the mind, body and spirit before praying and Native Americans also used White Sage in ceremonies of birth and death.
How to Use:
Light White Sage on the tips of the bundle. Placing a few Sage leaves into a fireproof bowl and lighting them is another option. Gently blow out the flame after it develops so that the Sage is smouldering. Be sure to keep the windows and doors closed of the room that is being smudged. Take proper safety precautions such as turning off ceiling fans or moving any flammable objects away from the burning Sage. You can walk around the space, holding the Sage above a fireproof bowl.
A traditional belief is, that you don’t stop the White Sage from burning, as when all the negativity has been cleared from the space, the sage will automatically stop burning on its own. It should also never be doused with water unless in an emergency situation.
And lastly...
7. Clear out the clutter!!
Physical dirt, dust and clutter can make a space feel 'too full' and unwelcoming. Keeping a clean, clutter-free home also means that negative energy won't have a place to hide. Make sure to open your windows and doors every day! Allowing fresh air to flow in, allows for negative energy to flow out.
